Dunalastair Today

Dunalastair Las Condes

Since 1981 Dunalastair has been a co-educational institution firmly committed to the advantages of the joint education of boys and girls.

During the summer of 2007 the School was totally remodelled.  A new wing was built for students from years 1 to 6, with an underground gymnasium/theatre, which resulted in a larger patio in which the students play during their breaks.

The Senior School (years 7 through 12) was also remodelled and most of its classrooms have interactive whiteboards.  Teachers in all areas have now been provided with laptops to enable their teaching to make the most of what ICT can offer the learning process.  As a necessary complement to this the school has a solid intranet aimed at improving the level of communication and information amongst members of the School community, and at improving the tracking of student progress and general school management.

At present, our school in Las Condes is recognized as an IB World School, offering the Diploma Program during the last two years of education.

The school is divided into 3 sections allowing a more personalized attention to our students:

Infant School, from Playgroup (3 years of age) to 2nd básico
Junior School, from 3rd to 6th básico
Senior School, from 7th básico to IVº Medio

Dunalastair Chicureo

Dunalastair Chicureo started in March 2004 with a small number of Playgroup and Pre-Kinder students (8 children at the beginning and 13 at the end of the year). This year we have nearly 700 students from Playgroup to 8th básico.

The School Curriculum is based on the first years of the IB suite of programmes, the Primary Years Programme.  Having already had the required training to become a candidate school, and experience teaching the programme, we hope to obtain full recognition soon.

Dunalastair Chicureo offers the parents of Colina Valley a bilingual education, combining the best elements of a classical liberal education and the latest technological advances to improve learning.

Our Chicureo site reflects the fact that it is a growing school. Currently we have all the classrooms that will finally be the Infant and Junior School area, as well as the changing rooms for our fields. We hope to begin work on our synthetic hockey pitch toward the end of the year. This site is also providing all staff with their own notebook computers, and all classrooms have wi-fi connections to internet and interactive whiteboards that can be shared for the upper levels.

Dunalastair Peñalolén

The story of Colegio Peñalolén starts with a dream. The dream of a group of brothers and friends who wanted to make a contribution to the country and Peñalolen’s education, through an innovative project with a solid values proposal and that integrated the daily practice of physical activities for all its students.

The De la Maza Ríos brothers set up in the 2,5 hectares terrain inherited from their father a school that was different from the rest. An institution that would not only develop its students’ intellectual skills, but also would give them an instruction that would allow them to become successful persons, in both technical and social abilities.

And so with “Educating for Life” as its motto, Colegio Peñalolén opened its doors in March 2006. The name of the school, somewhat odd for a bilingual school with a “full immersion” programme, had a significant meaning for its founders, since the Mapuche word Peñalolén means “gathering of brothers”.

Since its very beginning, a unique ethos was characteristic of the school. Its 75 students, families and collaborators gave an enthusiastic start to the project, hoping that the school would grow as tall and strong as the Cedar that was planted during the opening ceremony, in 2006.

Over the years, this effort began to pay off: the number of families that joined the school started to increase, and under its new director, Ms. Claudia de Marinis, new and challenging courses of study and programmes were introduced, and excellent results were obtained in national evaluation tests.

In August 2010 Colegio Peñalolén became part of the Dunalastair Schools network.

Today, Dunalastair Peñalolén has with three hundred and fifty students from Playgroup to 7th grades and enrollment continues to increase.

The school’s curriculum will gradually be changing, and our main objective will be to begin the process that will authorize us in time to offer the International Baccalaureate’s Programmes, which is part of the curricular model of Dunalastair Las Condes and Chicureo, Dunalastair Peñalolén offers a bilingual education, emphasizing the combination of the best elements of a liberal, classical education, and will soon be introducing using the best technology available to enhance or children’s learning experience.
